Water in the woods of Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes – Enhancing the value of this resource

Enhancing the value of the natural resource of water is an important issue for the woods  of the Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes, which are owned by the City of Paris. This issue has diverse aspects : heritage, landscape, environmental, ecological, usage.
Awareness of the links which exist between the surface water and the hydraulic underground network remain today, as in the past, essential to a good understanding of the water networks in the woods. It is also indispensable when considering how the landscape and usages related to water can be developed.
The aim of this study is to contribute to setting up a common, shared basis of knowledge about the water resources in the woods. It completes studies carried out by the City of Paris Department of Green Spaces and the Environment DEVE  which are intended to enhance the landscape and ecology of the water network.
A series of maps comparing the two woods has been made. They show the evolution of the water network since its creation in the 19th century, its present function (supply and outlets),  how the non-drinking water network functions, supplying watering systems and managing rainwater.
On the basis of the diagnosis, thematic issues linked to the water resource have been defined. These issues are put into perspective alongside recent achievements and projects. Ways of evolving, certain exploratory, are proposed, in particular to develop the biodiversity and new usages : water games, swimming, skating, water activities and events.
Study carried out in liaison with the Department of Green Spaces and the Environment (DEVE).
