The Tramfret project – Setting up the transportation of goods by tramway
This study is part of Apur's partnership programme and was carried out thanks to complementary funding from the Région Île-de-France and  DRIEA-IF. It's aim is to show how possible it would be to incorporate the transportation of merchandise by tramway in a logistically organised way and to assess the pros and cons.
The TramFret, a solution for urban deliveries to be tested
On 16th February 2012, the Île-de-France Regional Council adopted its new Plan for Urban travel and transportation (PDU) fixing the main mobility guidelines for the 12 million Francilians expected by 2020. The TramFret project corresponds in every way to the objectives drawn up in this document, which state that streamlining the flow of merchandise in densely urbanised areas could be achieved by projects using the public transport network to cover the final kilometres between warehouse and the final delivery point, as indicated in the attached PDUIF  “Action files”.
In its analysis note 274 (02/04/2012), the Strategic Analysis Counsel considers using the tramway to improve the urban distribution of goods.
TramFret not only interests municipalities in Île-de-france, other French cities are looking into how their tramway networks can be used for delivering goods, Montpellier and Clermont-Ferrand are the most advanced in this area.
