Population, housing, employment – Part 1: the population in 2013
Analysis of 2013 census results
On 1st January, 2013, the population of the Greater Paris Metropolis - Métropole du Grand Paris was 6,968,051 compared with the 2008 figure of 6,814,588. The metropolitan population had therefore increased by 153,463 between 2008 and 2013, an average of 30,693 inhabitants per year or an annual growth of 0,4 %. Overall numbers continued to rise more slowly than during the period 1999-2008, when the annual rate of increase was 0,8 %. In 2013, the Grand Paris Metropolis represented 58% of the population of Ile-de-France and contributed 51% towards demographic growth in the region.
In Paris, the population was 2,229,621 on 1st January 2013. This figure showed an increase of 18,324 inhabitants compared with the 2,211,297 inhabitants legally registered in 2008, representing an average annual growth rate of 0.2%, lower than that observed over the period 1999 – 2008 (0.5%). Between 2008 –2013, the demographic growth in Paris was 6% of the regional growth rate whereas between 1999 – 2008, Paris contributed up to 12% of the growth in Ile-de-France. This decrease in contribution by the capital was made up for by the communes in Ile-de-France outside the Grand Paris Metropolis, which saw their contribution grow from 39% between 1999 – 2008 to 49% between 2008 – 2013.
The impact of residential migration has long protected the capital from demographic ageing: Paris attracts a significant number of students and young workers while its older population tends to move to the countryside when they retire. But since 2008, with the arrival of the baby-boom generation into their 60s or older and with a lengthening in life expectation, the population in the capital and in the rest of the Metropolis has started to age. The combined effect of an ageing population and a noted decrease in the birth rate points to a slowing down in demographic growth in the capital and the other territories of the Grand Paris Metropolis.
The second part of the study dealing with housing in 2013 came out in February 2017 and a third part on the question of employment in the metropolis is to be published.
