Incubators in the Metropolis of Grand Paris: a portrait of Paris&Co

On the occasion of welcoming the 1000th startup to be accompanied by Paris&Co, Apur proposes a portrait of their work as an incubator, one of the five areas of activity of this unusual organisation set up by the City of Paris at the end of the 1990s.

Since 2016, Apur has been involved with its partners in an observatory approach to innovation in the Metropolis of Grand Paris. In the context of the study currently being made on the activity of companies that have left the incubator, and on the arrival of the 1000th startup to be accompanied by Paris&Co, Apur proposes a portrait of its incubator activity, one of the five areas covered by this unusual organisation that was set up by the City of Paris at the end of the nineteen-nineties.

Due to Paris&Co’s long experience as an incubator it has become an atypical key player and observer of Parisian and Metropolitan innovation. For 20 years its structure was always evolving, then in 2013, the incubation format was radically transformed. In a few years the Paris&Co incubators, that had covered non-specialised fields of technology such as digital and new medias, transferred to sectoral platforms articulated around one incubator venue which associates startups and public and private key players that deal with themes connected to urban innovation. This change corresponds to new needs of large companies and startups, but also to the transformation of a richer more diversified landscape of accompanying organisations in the Metropolis.

Implicit to this change is the transforming role of the City of Paris that has become more involved in assisting and facilitating. Paris&Co’s continuing commitment to metropolitanisation raises new questions, including the localisation of platforms.

It is still too early to draw conclusions about these platforms but one fact is evident: the analysis and scope of the urban impact of new services and new products proposed by startups implies implementing specific methodologies.
