Architectural, landscaping and environmental recommendations for the banks of the River Seine in Paris

It seemed necessary to revise the Decree of Recommendations in the light of two decades of application and new environmental challenges. They apply to all the embankments in Paris and aim to enhance the Seine and and homogenise the visual aspect of facilities installed.

The  recommendations define a specific and common vocabulary for the lower banks of the River Seine in Paris. They aim to highlight the unique nature of the site, over and above the wide diversity of uses to be found there and to render coherent the  presence of the numerous key players and managers (HAROPA PORT | Paris, the national waterway authority VNF, City of Paris, lessees…).
The drafting committee met for a little over a year bringing together HAROPA PORT | Paris, VNF, the City of Paris, the Architects des Bâtiments de France and Apur. It communicated the drafted recommendations to the Paris Council on 13th October 2022, which were then approved by the HAROPA PORT | Paris Board of Directors on the 9th December 2022.
The strong and timeless characteristics of the Parisian river banks, found in the previous 1999 recommendations, have been preserved.  To these have been added resilience and adaptation to climate change.
