According to the figures of the last population census carried out by Insee, the population lowered in Paris on an average of 11,930 inhabitants each year between 2011 and 2016, that is at a rate of 0,5% per year. Nineteen out of the twenty districts recorded, saw their population decrease. Only the 19th district’s population grew slightly over that period. This fall is linked particularly to the intense rise of unoccupied accommodation which reached 17% of housing units in 2016.

According to recent work on population projection, if the recent demographic trends continue, in 2050 Paris will record a population close to that of 2013 (2,23 million).
The capital will experience a slight fall in its population until mid-decade 2020-2030, before slightly rising, due to fewer people moving away than in the present day.
